2026年7月18日〜28日、ニュージーランド北島へ、中村先生、ガブリエル、上杉の3名で出張に行ってきました。

今回の出張の主な目的は、ICRS 2026（International Coral Reef Symposium：国際サンゴ礁学会）への参加と、以前中村研究室で一緒に研究をしていた吉開さんが講師として勤務するワイカト大学（University of Waikato）への訪問です。

ICRSは、世界中から2,000人以上のサンゴ礁研究者が集まる、この分野で最大規模の国際学会です。5日間の会期中には、約1,400件の口頭発表と1,000件以上のポスター発表が行われました。

中村研のメンバーもそれぞれ研究成果を発表し、自身の研究について世界各国の研究者と議論を交わしました。

最先端の研究に触れられることはもちろん、これほど多くの研究発表を一度に聞くことで、「現在、サンゴ礁研究がどのような方向に進んでいるのか」「世界の研究者がどのような課題に注目しているのか」といった研究分野全体の流れを肌で感じることができました。普段の研究活動だけでは得ることのできない、非常に刺激的で有意義な機会となりました。

セッションの合間や食事の時間には、他大学の日本人研究者や海外の同世代の研究者とも交流し、親睦を深めることができました。研究内容について議論するだけでなく、お互いの研究生活や将来について話すことができたのも、国際学会ならではの貴重な経験でした。

学会後には、ハミルトンにあるワイカト大学を訪問しました。

ワイカト大学では、中村先生が学生や教員の方々に向けて講演を行いました。お昼休みの時間帯にもかかわらず多くの方が参加し、講演後も終了時間ぎりぎりまで活発な質疑や議論が続きました。

講演の前後には、吉開さんや研究室のメンバーと一緒に食事をしたり、研究室や大学内を案内していただいたりしました。現地の研究環境や大学の雰囲気を知ることができ、とても楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。

今回初めて訪れたニュージーランドは、人口密度が日本の20分の1以下と低く、都市のすぐ近くにも豊かな自然が広がっていました。また、マオリの文化とイギリスにルーツを持つ文化が共存している点も印象的で、とても興味深い国でした。

今回は北島のみの滞在で、南島を訪れる時間はありませんでした。機会があれば、ぜひまたニュージーランドを訪れてみたいと思います。

From July 18 to 28, 2026, Nakamura-sensei, Gabriel, and I traveled to the North Island of New Zealand for a research trip.

The two main purposes of our trip were to attend the International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) 2026 and to visit the University of Waikato, where our former lab member, Yoshikai-san, is currently working as a lecturer.

ICRS is one of the largest international conferences dedicated to coral reef research, bringing together more than 2,000 researchers from around the world. Over the five-day conference, approximately 1,400 oral presentations and more than 1,000 poster presentations were given.

Members of the Nakamura Lab also presented their research and had the opportunity to discuss their work with researchers from many different countries.

In addition to learning about the latest advances in coral reef science, the sheer number and diversity of presentations provided us with a broader perspective on the field. We were able to get a sense of where coral reef research is currently heading, what questions are receiving increasing attention, and what challenges researchers around the world are trying to address. It was an inspiring and valuable opportunity that is difficult to experience through our everyday research activities alone.

During breaks between sessions and over meals, we also had many opportunities to interact with other Japanese researchers as well as researchers of our generation from overseas. Beyond discussing science, it was great to exchange ideas about research life, future careers, and our experiences working in different countries.

After the conference, we traveled to Hamilton to visit the University of Waikato.

At the university, Nakamura-sensei gave a seminar to students and faculty members. Despite being held during the lunch break, the seminar attracted many participants, and the discussion continued actively until the very end of the session.

Before and after the seminar, we had lunch and dinner with Yoshikai-san and his colleagues and were shown around their laboratories and the university campus. It was a great opportunity to learn about their research environment and experience the atmosphere of a university in New Zealand.

This was my first visit to New Zealand. With a population density less than one-twentieth that of Japan, the country has an abundance of nature, even close to its cities. I was also fascinated by the way Māori culture and British-influenced culture coexist and shape the character of the country.

Unfortunately, we only had time to explore the North Island during this trip and could not visit the South Island. Hopefully, I will have another opportunity to return to New Zealand in the future!
